> The College of Education has seven programs ranked in the Top 10 in the nation, and for the sixth consecutive year the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services is ranked first, according to the 2005 U.S. News & World Report survey of graduate programs.

> This year's edition of the Best Graduate Schools by U.S. News ranked the college 22nd in the nation. Five programs--elementary education, higher education administration, administration and supervision, education policy and secondary education - improved their rankings. The college holds 10 rankings in the Top 15, including the rehabilitation counseling program (9), which falls under another category and was last ranked in 2004.

> In fiscal year 2005, the College of Education attracts $17.4 million in externally funded research and sponsored programs.

> Optimizing Science Achievement for All Students is the topic of the second annual research symposium sponsored by the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education in September. The symposium is supported with second year funding from NSF, and attracts nearly 100 participants from across the nation.

> The College of Education and its Senate honor 11 outstanding faculty, staff, and students at its second annual awards ceremony. Honorees were Margaret J. McLaughlin, Ph.D., Betty L. Malen, Ph.D.; Francine H. Hultgren, Ph.D.; Peter E. Leone, Ph.D.; Blesilda H. Lim, Harriet K. Oliver, Rose Santellano-Milem; Stephen J. Tonks; Roy Levy; Daniel C. Moos and Anita Mazzocchi.

> The College of Education Alumni Chapter honors its outstanding alumni at ceremonies Nov. 17. Those recognized were: Outstanding Leader(s), Thomas Healy, Ph.D., '72; and William C. Strasser, Jr., B.A., '52, M.A., '54 and Ph.D. '61; Outstanding Professional(s), Bruce W. Sorter, B.A., '67 and Ph.D., '72, and Blossom Patterson, M.A., '82 and Ph.D., '98; Outstanding Scholar, James M. O'Neil, Ed.D., '75; Outstanding Teacher(s), Walter R. "Skipp" Lee, B.S., '87; Karin Stewart, B.S., '91; and Outstanding Service to the College, Marie Smith Davidson, M.S., '67 and Ph.D., '71; Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year, Marilyn A. Harris, Ph.D., '82; Outstanding New Scholar(s), Peggy Van Meter, Ph.D., and Jairo Nelson Fuertes, B.A., '87, M.A., '92 and Ph.D., '96; Outstanding New Professional, Heath E. Morrison, M.Ed., '94 and Ph.D., '05.

> Carol Seefeldt, Human Development faculty member, passes away on January 14.

> Marilyn Church, former director of the Center for Young Children, passes away.

> Barbara J. Finkelstein, Education Policy and Leadership, and Nathan A. Fox, Human Development, are recipients of the University Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award.
