> The College of Education brings $19.5 million in externally funded research and sponsored programs, the highest amount to date.

> The Center for Assessment of Higher Education (CAHE) is established within the Department of Measurement, Statistics and Evaluation. The mission of the Center is to develop and foster collaborative, interdisciplinary research that focuses on assessment of the quality of education and research in university settings.

> The Center for Research on Latino Educational Success is established as part of the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement in Urban Education (MIMAUE) to improve Latino student success in pre-kindergarten through College through research and development.

> The NSF awards the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education a grant to sponsor a two-day symposium on "Optimizing Mathematics Achievement for All Students," held in September. More than 100 graduate students and educators attend the event, designed to explore topics related to minority achievement and encourage research in the field.

> The University of Maryland's College of Education and Senate initiates a new awards program to honor six faculty and staff for teaching, scholarship, leadership, and service. Recipients are Robert Lent, Greg Hancock, Hanne B. Mawhinney, Ph.D., Kathleen A. Angeletti, Ph.D., Judy Foster, William O. Strein, Ph.D. The six honorees were chosen by unanimous vote of the College of Education Senate Awards Committee,

> Charles J. Beatty, 70, a College of Education faculty member for 33 years, dies in September. He joined the University of Maryland's Department of Industrial, Technological, and Occupational Education in the College of Education as a professor and acting chairman in 1966. Beatty retired in 1999 as associate dean for student affairs in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. He continued to coordinate the College of Education graduation until his passing.

> A post-baccalaureate certificate program in the Department of Measurement, Statistics and Evaluation is approved.
