> The College of Education garners $11.5 million in externally funded research and sponsored projects.

> Hugh Gerthon "Buck" Morgan, Ph.D, professor emeritus of the Department of Human Development and co-founder of the Institute for Child Study, dies in March. Morgan was director of the institute for 20 years until his retirement in 1980. The institute, part of the College of Education's Human Development department, was started in 1946 by Morgan and his mentor, Daniel Prescott, Ph.D. Morgan served as assistant director of the institute, and was a full professor. At that time, he was the youngest full professor at a major university.

> The College of Education honors 12 alumni at its Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony. Recipients are Rose Wiseman, M.A., '51 , Dean's Award for Lifetime Achievement; Linda Gambrell, Ph.D., '73, Outstanding Scholar; Norman Phillip Ross, Ph.D., '73 Outstanding Scholar; Edward Root, Ed.D., '70, Outstanding Leader; Patricia Green, Ph.D., '94, Outstanding Professional, Nancy Jo M. Scheers, Ph.D., '82, Outstanding Professional, Morris Tischler, M.A., '55, Outstanding Entrepreneur, David Gleason, Ph.D., '79 - Outstanding Entrepreneur; Dorothy White, Ph.D., '97; Outstanding New Scholar, William Porter, Ed.D., '76, Distinguished Service to the College of Education; Barbara Jeweler, M.A., '78, Alumni Teacher of the Year; and Elaine Tubb, M.A., '97, Elaine Tubb, Alumni Teacher of the Year. Rose Wiseman is named the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and is honored in absentia at the University of Maryland Alumni Awards Gala.

> A new M.Ed. program is approved in Education Concepts and Practices.

> The Department of Education Policy and Leadership offers a doctoral program in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center.

> The Counseling and Personnel Services department eliminates the Community/Career Counseling program.
