> Just over $15 million in externally funded grants and research dollars are awarded to the College of Education for fiscal year 2002.

> Portia Shields, Ph.D.,'74, receives the College of Education 2002 Distinguished Alumnus Award (for Schools/Colleges) at the Third Annual Alumni Association Awards Gala. Shields is President of the Albany State University in Georgia.

> The Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement in Urban Education (MIMAUE) sponsors its rescheduled two-day conference, "Achievement - A Shared Imperative " in June 2002. Hyundai Motor America joins Lockheed Martin Corporation to support the event, with co-sponsorship from the Maryland State Department of Education.

> The University of Maryland's College of Education is ranked 21st in the nation, according the to U.S News & World Report survey of Best Graduate Schools. For the third consecutive year, Counseling and Personnel Services is ranked first in the nation. The Department of Special Education is ranked 5th, up from its 10th place ranking in 2001. The college is ranked in the top 20 in all nine of the ranked specialties in which it has programs.

> The Office of Laboratory Experiences (OLE) is disbanded.

> The College raises $18 million in external funding for research.

> Allan L. Wigfield, Human Development, is honored with the University Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award.
