> Willis Hawley is appointed Dean of the College as of July 1. While in a previous position at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Dean Hawley organized the Common Destiny Alliance (CODA) for "the purpose of enhancing the quality and equity of relationships among people of different races and ethnicities." CODA is transferred to the University of Maryland upon Hawley's appointment as Dean.

> The Center for the Study of Troubling Behavior is established in the Department of Special Education.

> The College closes the Department of Industrial and Technological Occupations to new students.

> The Maryland Assessment Resource Center is established within the Department of Measurement and Statistics, with support from the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Maryland State Department of Education. The Center provides services to public higher education institutions in assessment projects.

> Donald Maley, former Acting Dean of the College and professor of Industrial Technology, passes away.

> The Multicultural Education Infusion Center at San Diego State University asks the College of Education to join its programs in professional development.

> The College Student Personnel Program in the Counseling and Personnel Services department receives the Academic Unit Minority Achievement Award from the U.S. President's Commission on Ethnic and Minority Affairs.

> The Center for Young Children relocates; its new building is slated to open in September.

> The Counseling and Personnel Services department's Community Counseling program becomes the Community/Career Counseling program.
