> The Center for Teaching Excellence is founded in conjunction with the Office of the Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Studies to enhance undergraduate teaching on campus. The Lilly-CTE Teaching Fellows Program brings together 10 faculty from various departments throughout campus to work on ways to improve undergraduate education at the University.

> The Center for Policy Options in Special Education is funded by a three-year grant.

> The Maryland Deaf-Blind Project (later renamed Connections Beyond Sight and Sound) is founded in collaboration with the Maryland State Department of Education and the U.S. Office of Special Education. The project provides training and consulting to schools, agencies, and families throughout Maryland on behalf of children with dual-sensory impairments (deaf-blindness).

> The Maryland Math and Science Regional Center is founded to help prepare pre-college students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Washington, D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland for careers in math and science. The program, along with Upward Bound, is housed in the West Education Annex.

> The Maryland Assessment Resource Center is founded in the Department of Measurement, Statistics and Evaluation with funding from the Maryland State Department of Education. Its purpose is to provide support for research on local, state, and national assessment issues.

> Carol Seefeldt, Human Development, heads Project Transition, which studies the effectiveness of the transition of students from Head Start programs to public schools.

> The College of Education establishes a Board of Visitors to advise the College.

> The Schindler Education Center at the University of Northern Iowa is dedicated on May 13 in honor of late professor of Elementary Education.
