> A new program in Special Education is established, headed by a Coordinator of Special Education Programs. The Special Education Advisory Committee reports that the University of Maryland is considered an ideal location for offerings in special education because of proximity to the National Institute of Health, the medical school services and the U.S. Office of Education.

> From July 1-19, the College administers a summer special education workshop in Montgomery County schools. The workshop is co-sponsored with the State Department of Education and the Montgomery County Board of Education.

> The College embarks on several initiatives in mathematics and science education. The Colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, and Education at the University of Maryland jointly offer summer institutes in Technology, Mathematics and Science Teacher Education with support from the National Science Foundation. This same year, the College along with the Future Scientists of America Foundation of the National Science Teachers Association, and the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company sponsor a summer Workshop on the Improvement of Science Teaching for forty junior and senior high school science teachers.

> James Hymes, a specialist in early childhood education, joins the faculty.

> UMMap (University of Maryland Mathematics Project) is established as a joint project between the Colleges of Education, Engineering, and Department of Mathematics, with funding from the Carnegie Foundation. The purpose of UMMap is to develop materials for junior high school mathematics.

> The College holds a Summer Workshop in Art and Music for Teachers .

> On recommendation of the University Faculty Assembly, a Placement Service is established under the Executive Dean for Student Life's Office. The College supported the establishment of the service. In a joint appointment with the Counseling Center, it employs an Assistant Director of Placement and Credentials Services to oversee teacher placement.

> The College collaborates with the State Department of Education and the College of Special and Continuation Studies on sponsoring a four-day non-credit Transportation Institute from June 25 to June 28. The Institute is geared towards school bus drivers and transportation supervisors in the public schools.

> R. Lee Hornbake leaves his chairmanship of the Department of Industrial Education to become Associate Dean of Faculty for the University.
