1943

> The College confers its first doctoral degree (Ph.D.).

> Arnold Joyal becomes Acting Dean during 1943-1946 while Harold Benjamin serves in the U.S. military during World War II.

> Despite warnings by Joyal that the program violates the use of Federal Lanham Act funds, President Byrd requires that all seniors undergo mandatory eight hours/week of shop training in sheet metal/welding in on-campus workshop co-sponsored by the National Youth Administration. A scandal ensues after the Baltimore Sun published an exposé in April 1943 and the NYA is abolished by Congress a month later.

> The Works Progress Administration closes its Recreation/Nursery School project in several counties throughout Maryland. The University of Maryland had participated in the programs.

> From July 1 to August 13, the College holds its annual Summer Session for Teachers, including courses in Education, Home Economics Education, and Industrial Education.

> The College establishes a separate Childhood Education (Nursery School) curriculum for the training of nursery school and kindergarten teachers.

> Around 1943, Industrial Education moves with the Engineering Department to H.J. Patterson Hall on the Mall.

> The College establishes doctoral programs in General Education, Educational Administration, and Curriculum and Instruction.
